Investing in Learning: How Cocoa Companies Are Strengthening Child Labor Prevention Through CLEF

Investing in education is becoming one of the most powerful levers for cocoa and chocolate companies to mitigate child labor risks.

In Côte d’Ivoire, 16 companies have partnered with the Government and two philanthropic foundations to expand access to quality education in cocoa-growing regions—an unprecedented collective effort.

In this interview, Jean-Claude Tano, National Coordinator of the new National Program for the Improvement of Foundational Learning (PNAPAS), explains why trained teachers, well-resourced schools, and engaged communities are key to reducing dropouts and preventing child labor.

CLEF is a commitment to:

CLEF funds school infrastructure and childcare facilities, supports teacher training in evidence-based pedagogical techniques, promotes behavior change so parents engage in their children’s education and apply good parenting practices to boost early childhood development, and tests a cutting-edge school nutrition program.

CLEF welcomes new partners: contact us to learn more about the initiative and to get involved.
